Now that school is back in full swing, have you felt the weight of your child’s backpack?  Many students are carrying at least one quarter of their body weight.  The extra weight of a backpack could have effects on your child’s still-growing body.  Backpacks that are too heavy can be the root cause for back and shoulder problems for kids.  While schools are working towards solutions, here are a few items to think about when selecting a backpack for your child:

  • An ergonomic design
  • Select a bag that is never wider or longer than the child’s torso and not hanging more than 4 inches below the waist
  • Padded back and shoulder straps
  • Hip and Chest belts
  • Multiple Compartments – This will help distribute the weight
  • When in use, carry with both straps, not just one

Making these adjustment are great ways to prevent long term health problems.
