For the vast majority of drivers nationwide, auto insurance isn't an option, it's a requirement. However, there are ways for consumers to make sure they aren't overpaying.
First of all, the Insurance Information Institute suggests consumers shop around with multiple companies to make sure they are getting a good value, and not just the absolute lowest price. If drivers have an older, less valuable vehicle, the group says it may make sense to drop some coverage.
It may also make sense to raise the deductible on a policy, which will lower costs. However, drivers doing this should also make sure they have enough financial savings to actually pay it were they to be involved in an accident.
The III also reminds consumers not to be shy in asking about what auto insurance discounts a particular insurer may offer. Discounted rates may be available for anti-theft devices, low mileage or even having students with good grades.
Auto insurance quote figures vary significantly by state. Data released this year by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners found that the District of Columbia and New Jersey had the highest average auto insurance rates while North and South Dakota had the cheapest.
